Couldn't resist the idea in the rules of the forums. Change it if you want. The real purpose of this thread is, I want to know what people's views are on the space marines? Do you think they are total badasses or misled religious whimps?

They are cool. I mean they are pretty symbolic of 40K. However there is no question that they are over played and the army as a whole is tarnished by the sheer number of 11 year olds who can niether paint, play or be nice people.

Personally, I find Space Marines to be fascinating. Despite the fact that they are often seen as simplistic in concept, I do not believe they are. Those of you who have read some of my fiction, such as "Sanctus Ager?" may have noticed that I tend to try and explore the more human side of the Space Marines. I think it was well put when it was said that "space marines are human, fanatically loyal brainwashed humans, but humans nonetheless."

See, I try to explore the Human side of SM too. However, it isn't easy to write it.
Example:
My Company Champion is very human, bordering on Joker. Now, when I sent a survey around asking for people opinion's I asked about Characters.
Out of five/six:
Two loved Teatur for being so human. Two thought it didn't seem right.
So, writing like this is hard. It's beating a stereotype.

It is also about finding the correct balance, I find. The problem with trying to emphasize the human element of the space marines, is that many people forget that they aren't "normal" humans- they are alot more complex than that. Space Marines aren't the "joker" types, they are rather more restrained in many ways.
The trick is to find a delicate balance between showing the complexity of the human condition and remaining true to the essential spirit of the space marines.

Yeah, personally I think it depends on the specific marine.

Yeah, personally I think it depends on the specific marine. How would you differentiate them, on what basis and to what extent?

I actually believe they are drug controlled giants of death... but I've been wrong before.

Well they're kinda humans still, and every person is unique. Some marines I see as stupid, others wise, some rash.
